Our Publishing Principles

Better Bones, Better Body is published by the Center for Better Bones in East Syracuse, New York. Everything here is written to help you understand your own bones well enough to make your own decisions about them.

Who writes and reviews our articles

Articles are written by Dr. Susan E. Brown, PhD, a medical anthropologist and New York State Certified Nutritionist with more than forty years in clinical nutrition, bone health research, and teaching. She is the author of Better Bones, Better Body, the first comprehensive look at natural bone health.

Anything covering research findings, treatment options, diagnostics or medications is written or reviewed by Dr. Brown before publication. Mary Jo Boya reviews our articles for accuracy and clarity before they go live, and our published library is reviewed on a weekly cycle so that articles are updated when new evidence warrants it.

Every article carries a visible byline and a publication date. There is no anonymous content on this site and no ghostwriters — Dr. Brown writes the articles herself.

How we handle research

When we cover a newly published study, we read the study itself rather than relying on press coverage, and we link to the primary source so you can check our reading against it.

We report what the evidence shows, including where it is limited, contested or preliminary. When findings come from small studies, animal models or observational data, we say so. Where the evidence is genuinely unsettled, we say that too, rather than picking the tidier answer.

We also try to be clear about which is which. Research findings are reported as research findings. Dr. Brown’s clinical judgement, built over four decades of practice, is presented as her view and labelled as such.

Dates and updates

When we substantially revise a piece — new research, changed guidance, a correction — we update the date so you can see how current it is.

What this is not

This content is educational. It is not medical advice, and it is not a substitute for care from your own physician.

We do not tell readers to start, stop or change a prescribed medication. Decisions about osteoporosis medication belong to you and your physician, and we say so wherever we discuss those drugs.

If you take prescription or over-the-counter medications, talk to your physician before beginning any nutrition or supplement program.
